SIBL Bronco League Stars Head to Connecticut

The 12-year-old all-stars Swansea Independent Baseball League will head west to New Haven, Conn., this weekend to compete in the Bronco League North Region Tournament of PONY Baseball.

          According to SIBL President Andy Fyfe, Swansea will be one of six teams from New England and New York competing in the double-elimination tournament which runs Friday through Sunday. The tournament champion will earn a berth in the East Zone Tournament to be staged July 24 through 26 in Cranberry Township, Penn., and will keep alive its hopes of qualifying for the 2014Bronco League World Series to be contested Aug. 1 through 4 in Los Alamito, Calif.

          The tournament will be played at Fairmont Park in New Haven, home of the Dom Aitro Bronco League, which is serving as its host.

          Tournament action commences Friday at 9 a.m. when the Schuylerville (N.Y.) Colts meet the D.B. Razorbacks of Chestnut Ridge (N.Y.) and Swansea tests the Latin Souls of Brooklyn, N.Y., at 11 a.m.      Tourney games will also be played Friday at 2 and 4:30; Saturday at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 and 4:30, and the event will conclude Sunday with either one or two contests starting at 11:30 a.m.

          According to Fyfe, all tournament games will be played on a diamond where bases are 70 feet apart, the pitching mound is 48 feet from home plate, and Major League Baseball rules are utilized. Pitchers will frequently be required to work from the stretch position and to execute pick-off throws, while runners will be permitted to take leads off bases and to attempt steals whenever action is live.

          Swansea’s roster for the Region Tournament includes Nick Gerling, Lucas Crook, Logan Sherrat, Curtis Perry, J.P. Nasiff, Marcus Moss, Jared Koger, Garrett Lima, Alex Millar, Casey Santerre, Peter Gloddy, manager Dave Nasiff and coaches Dan Gerling and Gary Santerre.
