For the entire month of January, we will be raising money for Cops For Kids with Cancer. Dr. Ashley Glenn DPT, CKTPA of our Smithfield office brought this great charity to our attention. This year she will be running 118th Boston Marathon on behalf of the charity.
Last year as a proud member of the Wampanoag Road Runners, I had the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon for the first time. However, all of the beautiful memories of the Boston Community cheering for my friend, Jenny Candage and I were quickly overshadowed by the horrific events that fateful afternoon.
My family happened to be watching from Marathon Sports at the location of the first bomb. I was fortunate to finish faster than I anticipated that day with just enough time for my family to get out of harm’s way. At the time of the bombings I had separated from my family and was walking through the finish area. Being alone during the chaos was a nightmare, but it is nothing compared to what others experienced. I am just so thankful that my family was unharmed.
This year, I am proud to be running the 118th Boston Marathon on behalf of Cops For Kids With Cancer, a non-profit 501c3 organization benefiting families of children with cancer. Our organization works to fund raise money for families who are struggling to pay for the cost of their son or daughter’s care. According to the National Care Institute, approximately 10,400 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Our goal is to help give children the care they need. Most families cannot afford the medical bills to cure their child’s cancer. Our hope is that we can relieve families of this burden and help them to focus on their child’s recovery.
In 2012, Cops For Kids With Cancer raised a total of $280,000. A total of 56 families were provided with the means to care for their child’s disease.
This will be my second time running the Boston Marathon. It is truly an honor to have this opportunity to run with Cops For Kids With Cancer and help families in need. I will cherish every second from my training, to the fundraising, to every step of the 26.2 miles, and promise to do my best!
